Chapter 796, White Foot Six Legged Insect
by SilavinTranslator: Silavin
Upon waking, Su Bai observed a small insect perched on his window ledge. This was the first time he had encountered an insect with such an appearance.
Though calling it a small insect was not quite accurate. Its body size matched an adult’s palm and it was entirely black in colour.
Its external appearance closely resembled a spider, but the terminal segment of each of its six appendages was white.
“Are the spiders here always this large?” Su Bai raised his eyebrows. He habitually kept his window open during sleep, both for air circulation and to prevent complete darkness.
Su Bai disliked sleeping in total darkness. A brighter environment helped him rest more peacefully.
*Pitter patter…*
The black and white insect crawled along the bed edge for some time. Its appendages appeared exceptionally rigid, producing sounds reminiscent of striking iron blocks during movement.
Where the insect had been, it had left behind a deposit of excrement. Remarkably, although the insect’s body was not particularly large, its waste product was quite… substantial…
The mass was nearly comparable to the creature’s own size. Most importantly, it possessed no odour whatsoever.
“What the… How much did you eat?” Su Bai’s lips twitched involuntarily.
*Knock knock…*
*Creak!*
“Come in.”
After receiving permission, Yu Ying pushed open the door and walked towards the window. “Shaman, why didn’t you come out today?” she asked.
Previously, when Yu Ying knocked, Su Bai would immediately open the door and exit. Today, however, he had invited her inside.
“Look at this, and the black and white insect that just crawled outside. Do you know what species it is?” Su Bai asked.
The black and white insect had only just crawled outside. Its silhouette remained faintly visible.
He wanted to confirm whether this insect posed any threat. If it was harmless, he would continue sleeping with the window open.
Since his Danger Foresight Skill had not been triggered. The black and white insect appeared to not be dangerous, though it was still better to ask.
“Shaman, this insect is a White Foot Six Legged Insect. Adult White Foot Six Legged Insects are somewhat larger than this one. They pose no harm to Humans whatsoever,” Yu Ying waved her hand dismissively.
During childhood, Yu Ying had frequently accompanied Yan Hua to catch these insects for amusement. Consequently, she was thoroughly familiar with them.
“I see. As long as there’s no danger, that’s fine. Clean up its excrement though.” Su Bai said calmly.
He had not anticipated that a creature of such substantial size, resembling a spider so closely, would be entirely harmless.
On Earth, the majority of spiders were venomous. A single bite could be catastrophic.
“Excrement? It pooped in your room?” Yu Ying surveyed the surroundings curiously.
“This thing here. Seriously, for such a small body, it certainly produces a ton…” Su Bai indicated the deposit on the windowsill.
That substance did not resemble ordinary excrement. Its entirety was golden in colour, its appearance not as remotely nauseating as his own poop.
Yu Ying’s pink eyes finally settled upon the golden substance. Instantly, her eyes widened enormously.
She covered her mouth in delighted surprise, reaching out to touch the substance. Before she could make contact, she was stopped.
“What are you doing!? Using your bare hands is so unhygienic.” Su Bai grasped Yu Ying’s slender hand.
“Shaman, this isn’t dirty at all. This is actually edible.” Yu Ying extended her other hand to scoop a small amount.
Su Bai’s black eyebrows raised slightly, his expression clearly asking if she was joking.
Seeing that she was really about to consume it, he asked, “Wait, you’re not actually going to eat that, are you?”
Su Bai suddenly felt that Yu Ying had extreme taste buds. She was now about to consume excrement with her bare hands?
“Shaman, what the White Foot Six Legged Insect’s body produces isn’t excrement. This is really sweet. Would you like to try?” Yu Ying extended her hand towards him.
Su Bai shook his head without hesitation. “Are you absolutely sure this is edible? Not just a hallucination when you all are starving?” he asked.
He suspected that before his arrival, everyone had been unable to eat their fill. Sometimes consuming such substances might have been unavoidable.
But now that no one needed to endure hunger, continuing to eat such things seemed unnecessary.
“No, Shaman. This is a truly rare delicacy. It tastes really sweet.”
Yu Ying licked her finger, her face expressing complete satisfaction. “Shaman, it’s really very sweet. I don’t know what this is called, but it’s definitely not excrement.”
“From which part of the White Foot Six Legged Insect does this substance come out from? Why would it taste sweet?” Su Bai observed her expression, which does not suggest she was joking.
Moreover, ordinarily, Yu Ying was quite fastidious about cleanliness. She would absolutely never consume excrement directly like this.
“It all emerges from the white portions on its six feet. We don’t understand why this occurs.”
Yu Ying consumed a bit more, continuing, “But each time, it rubs its six feet together a lot, it produces a series of loud sounds. Then, this substance appears.”
Yu Ying had been fortunate enough to observe a White Foot Six Legged Insect producing this substance once before, and at close range.
“Huh?” Su Bai furrowed his brow in contemplation. [So this thing is similar to a bee?]
He too summoned his courage and obtained a small amount of the golden substance, extending his hand into his mouth to test the flavour.
He discovered that this substance was indeed sweet, and moreover, its taste was identical to Earth’s honey. It was really delicious.
“Shaman, how is it? I didn’t lie to you, right?” Yu Ying smiled with pursed lips, the corners of her mouth still bearing traces of golden substance.
“Indeed very sweet. Are these insects common? Why would one appear here?” Su Bai asked.
He was quite certain this must be a creature analogous to bees, because this substance’s taste was genuinely identical to honey.
If these creatures were abundant, perhaps they could produce some honey. Honey was undoubtedly an excellent substance.
This also explained why, despite entering the forest numerous times, he had never observed bee-like creatures.
Apparently, in this era, bees had transformed into spider-like organisms. This was genuinely difficult to comprehend.
“These insects are relatively rare. We only encounter them occasionally. They rarely enter the Tribe.” Yu Ying shook her head.
Consequently, Yu Ying had been particularly astonished upon seeing the White Foot Six Legged Insect earlier. Since departing the Ancestral Land, she had not seen one.
“These insects are all in the forest, right? Are they Collectivistic creatures?” Su Bai continued his questioning.
He had already begun developing ideas about having people collect the golden honey, and potentially domesticating these creatures.
“They’re all in the forest. Sometimes you can observe quite a few gathered together. This is what Ah’Hua told me. I haven’t gone out to observe myself.” Yu Ying explained.
Yu Ying wasn’t a Warrior Trainee. She wouldn’t dare venture into the forest on her own.
