For now, the barracks had become the servants’ quarters.

Normally they would live in the basement, but the basement had been sealed off, and there hadn’t been any room that looked like it.

“Come to think of it, there was a door to a basement behind the church…”

When Calogero said this as if he had just remembered, Edward smiled brightly.

    Calogero looked puzzled.

“…What is it? You know something?”

“It was the jail. Edward went there often.”

Sylvia turned around and told Calogero.

    “””Eh.”””

    Edward’s face clouded over.

“…Lady Sylvia. Isn’t that wording misleading?”

“The other day too, you left me alone and holed up in there with some man you locked inside!”

“Hey! That’s not how you say it!”

When Sylvia complained sulkily, everyone looked at Edward with cold eyes.

“Wait a second! Why does it sound so suspicious! That place was a jail for serious criminals! I went there because I had to interrogate them!”

There was, of course, a jail in town to hold criminals, but since the town hardly had any criminals to begin with, it was terribly unreliable.

Serious offenders were taken to the fortress jail, and depending on their crimes, they were executed right there.

    Calogero let out a sigh.

“If it was behind the church, then perhaps it was meant for confession, atonement, and purification afterward…”

“No way. At most it was for offering a final prayer. This place used to be a fortress, you know?”

    Edward denied it immediately.

Calogero thought that might indeed be true, and let out another heavy sigh.

There were several rooms that looked like armories.

But most of them were empty, with the occasional broken bow or rusty dagger lying around.

The only intact dagger among them was now being used by Gina. Edward had borrowed a sword that Sylvia found when she renovated the place.

The armories had been cleaned out and used as storage rooms. They probably wouldn’t be used unless a war broke out.

    “…Or so I’d thought.”

When they opened the one armory that had been sealed, it turned out to be fully stocked with weapons.

    “Wow, this is amazing.”

Gina let out an impressed voice as she stepped inside.

“The other armories were for regular soldiers, so maybe this one was for the knights. …Hm? This… isn’t this made with mithril? And this one’s magic steel…! Seriously, this place is full of treasure!”

Edward, who had a good eye for such things, shouted.

Beffa, who also knew about such things, examined the weapons closely and nodded.

“The Hughes Ducal family was a famous lineage of mages, wasn’t it? Still, it’s not like they would fill even the knight order entirely with mages… Maybe that’s why they hid this armory?”

Beffa said this while looking around the room.

“That might be it. For a ducal house that produced generations of mage‑corps commanders, even owning a large collection of top‑tier weapons, even if it was for war, would’ve looked bad, so they hid it.”

    Edward agreed.

Then he turned to look at Gina.

“Gina. If Lady Sylvia gives permission, why don’t you use the weapons here?”

    “Fweh!?”

Gina, who had been fussing over Sylvia and ignoring the conversation, let out a startled cry.

    “I give permission!”

Sylvia declared instantly, without a moment’s pause.

“The one I have now works perfectly fine!”

Gina had absolutely no interest in weapons. She could instantly judge the quality of fabric, but when it came to weapons, she thought anything was the same as long as it could be used.

Receiving a high‑grade weapon would only increase the risk of theft and cause trouble for her.

They soothed Gina, who insisted she didn’t need anything, and Edward decided he would pick something out for her later.
