The Adventures Of The Black Cat, Nyango Chapter 3, Festival Stalls

The streets of Ibro felt more like modern Europe than medieval Europe.
The roads were beautifully paved with earth attribute magic and the water and sewer service was maintained by magic tools.

Even though horse-drawn carriages are still the most common form of transportation, I’ve also occasionally seen magical carriages powered by magic tools.
Just as how Japan has developed through science and technology, life in this world has also become richer through magic tools.

In terms of tools for everyday life, there are no microwave ovens, but there are ovens in the form of magic tools and fridges and freezers are also starting to spread around.
In large cities such as the royal capital, there is a shortage of magic stones used for magic tools, and I’ve heard that some researchers are even trying to create monsters.

“Oh, they’re selling ice cream, Horacio.”
“Ice… what?”
“It’s a modified milk, cooled and hardened… actually, you’ll get it when you eat it. Uncle, give me two.”
“There you go!”

Due to the evolution of magic tools, it has become possible to create fridges that are the appropriate size for putting on carts, so it seems that they are doing mobile sales in summer.
Immediately after Horacio took a fearful bite out of an ice cream that was put on an edible plate that looked like a wafer, he devoured the whole thing in a frenzy.

“It’s cold, sweet, cold, and delicious!”

Its texture is not as good as what’s sold in Japan and it’s lacking the vanilla flavor.
Even so, the milk is rich and the taste isn’t bad.

 “Horacio, eat my half.”
“Eh, I’d feel bad since you’re the one who paid the money, Nyango…”
“No, with the way my body is, if I eat this all, I won’t be able to eat anything else. Help me out, so I can eat many other things and enjoy myself.”

The bovan Horacio already has a physique comparable to an adult apeman, but as a felan, my height doesn’t even reach 80 centimeters.
If I continue to eat, my stomach will be full before I finish enjoying touring the stalls, but if I have Horacio help me, I’ll be able to enjoy the menus of many food stalls.

The food stalls in Ibro seem similar to the ones in Japan, but they’re also somewhat different.
They are selling something that looks like crepes, but the filling is just meat and vegetables and something that looks like Ramen is just soup with pasta; while I vaguely feel that this wasn’t what I was looking for, it has the flavor of being at a foreign festival.

There’s no goldfish scooping, but there’s something that looks like diecutting and while there’s no target shooting, there’s a blowgun.

“Alright, Horacio. Let’s get the fire magic tool displayed up there.”
“Ehhhh… Nyango, that one won’t fall even if you hit it.”

A magic tool with a magic circle engraved on a whitish stone stood at the very top of the boxes piled up as 3 stages.
Both in terms and usage, it’s what we’d call a lighter in Japan.

5 blow darts cost one copper coin and if you buy magic tools at the store, it should cost around 2 silver coins.
It’s small for a target and it has some weight to it so it’ll just topple over instead of falling down. It’s a so-called prize for attracting customers, made to look just easy enough to be shot down while the reality is the exact opposite.

“Nyango, let’s choose the candy below instead.”
“Don’t worry about that, just aim. You won’t become a knight like that.”
“What, you got a call from the knights, sonny? That’s pretty big.”
“That’s right, Horacio is lucky today. Uncle, don’t cry even if he shoots down a magic tool.”
“Hahahaha, I won’t just cry about a fire magic tool, don’t worry.”

The middle-aged canian uncle shook his stomach, letting out a laugh.
Even if a few are shot down in one day, he’ll still get his money’s worth.

Since blowguns are all about lung capacity, there’s a big difference in the power of the blowgun between me and Horacio.
I’ll be the one to pay, and Horacio will be the one to actually blow into the blowgun.

With 2 copper coins, we used 10 blow darts, landing a direct hit 3 times. The magic tool collapsed 2 times out of those 3 but it didn’t show any signs of falling from the box.
Not only is the magic tool itself heavy, it also comes with a string to hang it around your neck.
Unless it hits the upper corner and falls while spinning, it’s unlikely to ever fall.

“Nyango, let’s go with the candy after all.”
“Don’t give up so easily. One more time, uncle.”
“Hahahaha, the felan kid looks more suited to be the knight.”
“Sure, if there’s a knight order with strange tastes that would scout a felan with sky attribute magic. Come on, Horacio, do your best!”
“Does it have to be that magic tool no matter what?”
“Yeah. Come on, hurry up!”

Horacio was distracted by the candy on the lower row, so I slapped his bottom and made him target the magic tool.
The 10 shots so far were camouflage, so to speak.

“Alright, take a deep breath before aiming… one more time. This time, take a breath slowly and hold it. Aim!
“Fuh!”

The dart only grazed the magic tool, hit the curtain in the back and fell.
“Okay, that was good. Calm down and concentrate!”
“Fuh!”

The next dart hit the magic tool, but since the latter hit the underside near the platform, it only shook a little and didn’t fall over.

“Good, just concentrate on 3 more tries. Relax your shoulders once, take a deep breath… Alright, let’s do this.”
“Fuh!”

This time, the dart passed over the magic tool.

“Good, your positioning is perfect. Just like that, relax and focus… alright, let’s do this.”
“Fuh!”

The dart hit the upper side just barely, and the magic tool tilted, shaking violently.
It rolled as it fell, twisting and turning, and tumbled off the corner of the box.

“Hell yeah! You did it, Horacio!”
“I-it fell, Nyango. It fell, it fell!”
“Gah… that was a shocker. Looks like you’re really lucky, kid. Here, take it!”

The canian uncle handed the magical tool to Horacio with a wry smile.

“I did it… here, Nyango. I finally got it.”
“That’s a parting gift from me. You have a wind attribute, so it should be convenient to have when you’re camping for training.”
“Eh… is that okay?”
“Of course. It was only worth three copper coins, but it’s a good item, right, uncle?”
“Hahahaha, it’s easily ten times that much, boy.”

The canian uncle had a new magic tool in hand, appealing to other customers.
I think he exaggerated a bit, but hearing that price, Horacio opened his eyes wide.

“Nyango, like I thought…”
“Take it, Horacio. In exchange, face the training without giving up and definitely become a knight.”
“Thank you… Nyango. I’ll treasure it and definitely become a knight.”

Horacio hung the magic tool around his neck and smiled shyly.
Well, the magic tool fell with cheating.

The moment the dart hit it, I pushed the magical tool down with a mass of air that I had on standby, and while I was at it, I solidified the air behind it diagonally so that it would roll down.
The magic tool rolled down without seeming unnatural, just as I had planned, so I ended up making a guts pose with all my might.

I did something bad to the canian uncle, but it should have been good publicity, because other customers started aiming at it one after another, thinking that prizes were actually winnable.
We probably wouldn’t be able to shoot down anything without cheating, even if we poured 3 silver coins in.

“Alright, Horacio. Let’s eat that next!”
“Black orc skewers… I wonder if it’s real.”
“Who knows. Maybe you’ll know if you eat it.”

Black orc is like Japanese black wagyu beef.
Each skewer contains four large pieces of meat, weighing about 100 grams, and costs two copper coins.
The price of about 200 Japanese yen seems too cheap for the real thing.

“Give me two, uncle.”
“Gotcha, it’s newly done too. Be careful, it’s hot.”

I paid four copper coins and handed one to Horacio.
The cross section of the meat was oval in shape, and at first glance it looked like a filet, but there’s no way you could buy a black orc filet at such a price.

The surface was crispy and had burn marks, but the insides were juicy and tender.
The rich flavor of the meat was further enhanced by the salt and blended herbs.

“Dewicious, what’s this, so dewicious!”
“Nyango, this is, really delicious!”
“Dewicious… black orc, so dewicious! Actually, uncle, which part of the meat is this?”
“How is it, delicious, right? That’s a genuine black orc, but which part of the meat that is would be a business secret.”

The Ursan uncle smiled proudly.
It’s probably the part of the meat that would normally be thrown away, but I am not a culinary expert, so I’m not sure.

“Hmm… I wonder where the meat is from. Well, it’s delicious so whatever. Alright, Horacio, let’s go to the next place.”
“Where are we going next, Nyango?”
“Next is… adventurers’ guild.”
“Whaaaaaat! Are you going to become an adventurer, Nyango?”

After completing the “rite of independence,” those who had their magic unsealed can register as adventurers.
Most of those who become adventurers are confident in their abilities, and it’s a profession that doesn’t suit me as a felan, both in terms of physique and the quantity of my magic powers.

“Don’t worry about it, let’s go.”
“W-wait a minute, Nyango.”
“If you don’t come quickly, I’ll leave you behind.”

I pulled Horacio, who seemed to be reluctant to part with the black orc skewers, and we set out for the adventurers’ guild of Ibro.
