―― Ah, my leg hurts.

I never thought we would be attacked by a monster and I’d slip on the muddy soil.
Right now I’m resting at a cave where I can shelter from the driving rain with Apricot and Ms. Cyan who we joined on the way, but at this rate we’ll be like the hunters becoming the hunted.

“I’m sorry, Apricot. You even had to treat me.”
“Heh, worry not. As I have abandoned the sacred hegemony, my magic belongs to the darkness and fire. Thus, it is not bad for thee to get some peace to heal your injuries.”
“I see, thank you.”

Yeah, I still have no idea what she’s talking about.
If I had to guess, I think she’s saying something like, “don’t worry about it. I’m not good at healing magic, so I can only do first aid, but you should rest.”

“By the way, I’m surprised you had bandages on you. Did you keep them in the pocket of your robe?
“No, those are the ones I was wearing… no, never mind. There is no way to know when my kin shall need them. They were merely a seal for Evil Gate. A mere fragment of its power.”
“I see.”

I wonder what’s Evil Gate? I’ll try asking Lord Clo if we can safely overcome this situation…if I can stay unscathed, that is.
We were attacked by the same wolf-type monster as the wolf that kidnapped the boy, but it was ‘Fenrir’, a monster that’s rarely seen around here.
With a total length of more than 2 meters, it can attenuate magical attacks and its strong body can kill a heavily armored soldier with a single blow.

“That hurts. I carelessly provoked it and it recognized us as its enemies, so it’ll come after us eventually.”
“…I’m sorry, Ms. Cyan, You had to protect me.”
“It’s fine, don’t worry. You were attacked suddenly, after all. You can’t think about that all the time.”

By nature, Fenrir is a monster that won’t attack unless you attack it first or violate its territory. Nevertheless, the Fenrir that appeared before us, attacked us out of nowhere.
A question arose as to why it did so. However, I had no time to ponder about it, because Ms. Cyan drew its attention by punching it and Apricot and I, who were relatively accustomed to magic and combat, bought time to let others escape.
We tried to escape when it was somewhat wounded and frightened, but I slipped on the soil and fell down. Just as Fenrir tried to attack me, Ms. Cyan protected me and was lightly wounded… I was honestly surprised that Ms. Cyan swung her fist to counter and blinded Fenrir’s eyes. Thanks to that, Fenrir ran away.

“I hope Khaki and the others returned to Shiki and reported the situation. There was a signal that Clo’s group returned to Shiki too, so I hope they evacuated…o-ow.”
“Ms. Cyan, is it the wound you got from protecting me?!”
“It’s fine, it’s fiiine. I just felt a bit uncomfortable because I’m not a good healer. Thanks for your concern, Io.”

The person herself was insisting that she was fine, but the bandages I could see from the slit of the tear in her habit were slightly red. The wound was closed now because of the healing magic that she said she was bad at, but it was obvious it hurt when she moved.

“More importantly, it’s time to move. There’s a chance it’ll sniff us out.”

We certainly can’t afford to rest like this.

It’s not a good idea to move carelessly either, but Fenrir has a good sense of smell. Apricot is using Space Preservationand Presence Concealment, but those are only effective within a certain range. After all, if Fenrir is lured by the smell of my or Ms. Cyan’s blood and finds us in a dead-end cave like this, we won’t be able to escape.

“Then, I will be going first. Ms. Cyan and Lady Violet, please follow after me.”

“You’re right. That’s better than us, the injured, taking the lead.”

“… Sorry. I will be counting on you.”

I am angry at myself. Even though I’ve learned the ropes of combat at the academy and from the tutors, I was no use in practice. Even now, I’ve entrusted the leadership to Apricot, who’s younger than me.

What good is a noble if they become a hindrance in dangerous situations like this? If I hadn’t slipped, we might have been able to escape. Ms. Cyan might not have had to get injured. If I’d been knowledgeable with the terrain, it might have been possible for us three to subdue Fenrir.

I have to discard thoughts about what ‘might’ have happened..

But I can’t help being reminded of—

‘You really don’t look at people.’

‘Are you not aware that your actions are nothing but a nuisance?’

‘Your conduct is too much.`

‘I can’t love the selfish you.’

—–Stop. Don’t think about it.

Those words don’t matter anymore. Leave self-reflection for later. For now just be happy that you’re alive. Keep thinking about how to escape from this situation.

Ignore the Count’s words. Don’t think about His Majesty’s words either. Don’t mind the words of Knight Commander’s son. His Majesty’s words don’t matter right now.

Right now you have to improve the situation even if by a little–

“Io, what’s–? what…is this—?”

“Ms. Cyan? What’s wrong sudden—?”

 … Ms. Cyan? Apricot?

What’s wrong all of sudden? Why are you guys suddenly holding your heads… and falling down…

“Kuh, this… is… ?”

What is this?

I was suddenly attacked by drowsiness and fatigue. It was like a wave of emotions that stole the freedom of my whole body and made me unable to stand, for a reason unrelated to the pain in my leg.

Is this magic? Even if it is, I’ve never heard of Fenrir being able to cast this kind of magic. Then, it has to be some other monster, or —

“Hey there, good evening.”

Yes, or maybe.

If the usage of this magic was unrelated to the monster. If it was used by the person who appeared in front of us right now and is standing at the entrance of the cave, it’s nothing but clear evidence of malice.

“Sorry but I had to put those two to sleep. Don’t worry, I won’t harm them.”

Ah, as expected, I wasn’t wrong to be wary, though it makes me a little sad to think that her expression of worrying about that child or the way she was having fun was a lie.

The one standing there was—

“Well then, I will kill you as requested, Violet.”

Standing behind one-eyed Fenrir was Schwarz.

Author’s note:

Apricot

A 14 y.o delusional edgelord with real abilities.

She’s bandaged even though she’s not injured and is wearing a witch-like robe and a big hat.

Her eyepatch (sealed right eye) makes her totally blind so she doesn’t use it outside.

This time she was wearing a robe in rain so she had to struggle after it absorbed all the rain. But she still won’t take it off.
