POV: Violet

3 weeks have passed since I came to Shiki.

There are many inconveniences compared to when I was in Azalea academy, like things being harder to obtain or the means of transportation being limited, but I’ve been getting used to it little by little.

Lord Clo and Gray are also taking good care of me.

They help me with everyday tasks so I’m not dissatisfied with my life here, teach me things I don’t know about and help me gain more experience little by little. They pay attention so I won’t push myself too much, but it’s not like they won’t let me do anything at all. They check on me first and then assign me some tasks. Though when I occasionally say something to denounce His Highness, they can’t help but shrink back,

I’ve also learned a lot about people here in those last 3 weeks.

First, Gray.

She’s a girl who excels in the magic aptitude for all attributes.

Currently she’s our adopted child/secretary, but I’ve heard from her that she’s a former slave.

It seems that the former lord of Shiki was a terrible person, who kept multiple slaves to satisfy his greed, neglected his duties, and was hated by the locals. Therein, Gray was discarded when Lord Clo became the next lord, because she was ‘too skinny and useless’… even just listening to it made my blood boil.

But when I asked her why she decided to reveal the matter of her being a former slave when I’d never find out if she never told me,

“The fact that I was a slave will not change. Even if I’m discriminated against because of it, I will accept it and keep spending my life with a smile.”

That’s what she said.

To be honest, I’m having trouble deciding how to treat Gray.

I understand that Gray doesn’t want to keep secrets from me, who’s technically her mother. However, she’s basically a commoner… who has neither distinguished herself in war nor made any contributions to the kingdom.

At the academy, I completely disavowed the actions of that woman who became close to His Highness due to their difference in status. Will I be able to see Gray not just as a secretary, but rather as a family? I do know that she’s not a bad girl though.

“Here I come, this is a direct transmission from Lord Apricot! My wrath, freed from the oppression! Awaken thy fire, o turning wheels!”

“Mow the grass normally!”

… Yeah, I know that she’s not a bad girl, but we have to do something about the way she’s so easily influenced.

Next is Ms. Cyan.

From what I’ve heard, she’s a year younger than Lord Clo and used to work as a sister in the royal capital. It seems that she ended up coming here after punching the archbishop because she didn’t like him. I’m surprised she wasn’t executed.

She’s the kind of a person who lives at full speed, just like my classmate Kriemhild.

She has magic aptitude for water and she has a relatively high amount of mana. However she doesn’t seem to like using magic herself. When I asked her for the reason,

“Eh, because it’s faster to just punch them than to make a mess.”

That was her answer.

Her physical abilities certainly not only rival those of His Highness or his friend Chartreuse, it might even surpass theirs. But when I asked her if that was alright for a nun,

“If I, as a person full of faith, am saying that it’s fine, God will let it go too!”

She said with a nice smile. I think it’s probably not good, but if push comes to shove, Priest Snow White will settle things so it should be fine. If I don’t convince myself like that, the image I have of sisters will crumble down… would I have spent time with people like this if I had been put into the monastery?

However, while it may be rude to say that this was unexpected, Cyan was wrapped in a mysterious atmosphere whenever she was praying.

There are many other odd-… unique people, but the one I don’t understand the most is Lord Clo.
Leaving aside people who are plain incomprehensible, Lord Clo is somebody I still don’t quite understand well.
Although he has excellent physical abilities, he does not have much mana for a noble. In fact, he has very little.
Also, Lord Clo isn’t very noble-like.
He cooks his own food and he sews his own clothes. According to him, he does sewing as a hobby.
It may be that he’s trying to put himself in the shoes of the commoners to build a good relationship with them, but I didn’t see much of the conduct of the nobles that I’d learned in his actions.

If you ask me whether I’m dissatisfied or not, I would say that I am dissatisfied. The nobles must act as exemplary models for the society. At least he doesn’t act in the way of the nobles as I know it…

“Lord Clo? He didn’t discriminate against me and even gave me his family name when I didn’t trust him at first. He is somebody I’m greatly indebted to. Huh, he isn’t noble-like? Yes, that’s why I treat him casually sometimes.”
“Clo? He says weird things sometimes but he’s not a bad person. But yeah, he’s not noble-like. That’s what makes him good though. Also, he can survive even if I hit him seriously so I can fight him without holding back.”
“Dear Clo? Unlike the previous lord, he’s a caring boy. He’s about the same age as my grandchild but I’m still indebted to him in various ways —  Nuh uh, I’m not letting that pass through, Green. That’s a ron.”
“Clo, you ask? He’s a man of many stories!  More importantly, what do you think about coming under me and being held if you guys are longer married? Haha”
“Clo? He’s a good person who even accepted someone like me. Mm, work is calling. I’m going to save the Sea God for a moment. Well then, taking off!”

Lord Clo is loved by his citizens.
Even though it’s only been 3 years since he took over as the lord and he’s only 4 years older than me.
Lord Clo certainly has a strange side to him. Sometimes he’ll guess right all the things I’d done at the academy and sometimes he looks more mature than his age. Though he’s often childish.
I wonder, what’s the way of nobles that I know and have learned to aim for until now?
Lord Clo differs greatly from what I’ve learned about how nobles should act. If I had to say, he acts more like that girl… treating everybody equally.
However, if Lord Clo is loved, maybe His Highness was attracted to her because that’s what nobles actually seek-

“Milady.”

And, while I was worried, the one who suddenly stood in front of me was a woman who I didn’t know well and who was wrapped in a somewhat colder atmosphere than the residents of Shiki.
But I know why she’s come here. There aren’t many reasons why somebody, whose purpose is spying on me, would stand in front of me.

“I have a message from the Master. Do not cut loose. That is all.”
“… I know.”
“He only has your best interests in mind, Milady. Please understand.”
“… Yeah, I know.”

I’m well aware that my father doesn’t care about me.

However, I don’t know what he will do if his watchdog judges that my noble demeanor isn’t up to an acceptable standard.
I also understand that keeping up that act would never help me become as beloved a figure as Lord Clo.
