    “Is something wrong?”

“Oh… Ms. Mary, it’s nothing. Thank you for bringing the plates.”

Just as I was preoccupied with a strange sense of incomprehensible unease and my hands had stopped moving, it was Ms. Mary instead of Gray, who came into the kitchen with the plates.

I said it was nothing, took the plates she was holding, and put them in lukewarm water.

“It’s nothing’ usually means that something is up, right? Did you sense a secret or have some kind of a six-sense premonition?”

“I understand what you are trying to say, but it’s really nothing.”

Indeed, in the stories if there’s a character that says ‘oh, it’s nothing’, they usually end up dealing with an important issue, usually being confronted with something like ‘if you had said something earlier, damage could have been minimized!’, but what I’m feeling right now isn’t that important… I think.

“Then it’s fine. Please don’t hesitate to share if there’s anything bothering you.”

“Of course, thank you for your concern.”

In fact, Ms. Mary didn’t seem to find anything strange, so I must have been mistaken.

It’s not good to worry about it too much, so I’ll just try to forget about it.

“Hehe, everybody seems to be having fun. Silva seems to be feeling more at ease than he did at first, so maybe coming to Shiki was a good idea after all.”

“As the Lord of this domain, I’m flattered to hear you say that, but I think it would be better to wait a little longer to see what the effects are before forming an opinion. We don’t know what kind of symptoms might show up.”

“Why did you phrase it as if you’re monitoring the progression of a disease?”

The conversation didn’t just end after she handed me the plates; Ms. Mary turned towards the dining room where people were still talking and smiled happily.

Her smile and words didn’t seem fake, so I think her words that this visit was a ‘good idea’ were sincere.

Speaking as a fellow Reincarnator, I’m not sure if she was feeling the same joy as I felt earlier though.

“So, have you come to understand love?”

    “Uu… you remembered?”

    “Well, of course I did.”

It would be crazy of me to forget that she came to Shiki right at the start of the new year, shouted ‘teach me about love’, and almost got misunderstood by Lady Violet.

    “So? Did you learn anything?”

“… I learned that it comes in many forms. Ultimately I think it all comes down to how you perceive it. Therefore, I’ll keep learning more about it.”

    “I see…”

To be honest, even I wouldn’t be able to define love, so I can’t make any definitive statements, and I want to continue to understand it with Lady Violet and Gray. So, I agree with Ms.Mary’s statement to keep learning about it.

“If we talk too long Violet will get jealous. I’ll go back now.”

While I agreed with her, I felt like I had to say something to Ms. Mary, who was trying to leave out of consideration for me and Lady Violet. Anything, whether it was a question or my own thoughts…

    “Um…”

    “Yes, what’s wrong?

And before I could even organize my thoughts, I called out to Ms. Mary as she was about to leave. She stopped with a slightly puzzled look on her face, waiting for me to sleep.

I was the one who called out to her, but I couldn’t keep her waiting, so I tried to tell her what I had thought of..

“… If Gray and Apricot end up enrolling this year, please keep an eye on them. They’re very pure in many ways.”

And I ended up saying something safe.

“Yes, of course. I’ll do whatever I can for my adorable underclassmen. What I told you about my guiding principle being ‘to make someone happy’, still remains unchanged. And among those ‘someones’, they are a little special to me, so I’m happy to support them.”

In response to my words, Ms. Mary gave me a smile that I think would drive Prince Vermillion crazy with joy if he saw it.

… I wonder, is it really okay to let things go on like this, including the matter from earlier? But then again, I don’t really know why I’m questioning this.

“… That’s right. I have to do what needs to be done, to ensure that those kids can enroll safely.”

However, I failed to notice the quiet, resolute words, the words I shouldn’t have missed,

Ms. Mary muttered just as she was leaving,
