Chapter 1180, Overlapping Tails
by SilavinTranslator: Silavin
Yan Hua had gone back and forth trying so many times, and the result was no surprise. She had fallen just as many times.
But Yan Hua had not given up. Each time she fell she did not cry out in pain. She simply righted the bicycle and started again.
Every attempt ended the same way, a wobbling tilt into the ground. Even those watching from the side felt the sting of it.
“Do you want to rest for a bit?” Su Bai watched and felt a pang of sympathy.
“No need, Shaman. I feel like I’m almost there.” Yan Hua wiped the dirt from her face and smiled.
She genuinely believed she was close. She had been slowly finding the feel of it, and she was worried that if she stopped now she would lose it entirely.
“All right. I’ll stay here and watch. You really are finding the feel of it, so I won’t hold you anymore.” Su Bai respected her choice.
“Of course.” Yan Hua said it cheerfully, then righted the fallen bicycle again.
“It looks so painful to watch.” Yu Ying had her hands twisted together.
Yu Ying was not a Totem Warrior. Her days were filled with handcraft work if not cooking, and she had not yet had the experience of falling like that.
So, seeing Yan Hua in this state made Yu Ying wince, and she felt genuinely worried over it.
“Her pretty face is all covered in dirt. I guess the same thing will happen to me when it’s my turn.” Sha Lan said it with a touch of anticipation.
After all, she was a Totem Warrior. Falls were not something she gave much thought to.
“Let Ah’Lan learn first. I don’t think I’ll be able to get it, and I don’t want to waste too much time.” Yu Ying laughed awkwardly, her teeth showing.
Yu Ying was only afraid of falling. Every time she went down it looked heavy, and she was terrified of breaking an arm or a leg and being unable to attend to Su Bai.
After all, the Shaman had grown accustomed to having Yu Ying nearby. If she were suddenly injured and could not do her work, it would surely leave him unsettled.
“Don’t be silly. You’re clearly the sharpest one here. How could you fail to learn it?” Sha Lan ruffled the other girl’s head.
Sha Lan genuinely believed Yu Ying was smart.
Much of that everyday wisdom had come from Yu Ying. Sha Lan had a careful memory, but she was not the one who handled the small tasks of daily living. In that regard, she was naturally no match for Yu Ying.
“I’d still rather watch how Ah’Lan does it first. With a few more examples, I might actually gather the courage to try it.” Yu Ying scratched the back of her head with an awkward grin.
She felt she did not have the reckless drive of a Totem Warrior, so all she could do was study the technique first.
If she had that same bold momentum, she would not have been afraid at all. She would have charged right in, just the same as the others.
“Shaman, look!”
While Yu Ying and Sha Lan were still talking, Yan Hua’s voice rang out from not far away.
It was a bright, happy sound. Everyone turned toward it.
Yan Hua was riding the bicycle steadily. None of that violent lurching from the very beginning remained.
Of course, there was still a faint wobble here and there. She was clearly not fully practised yet.
“Congratulations. I can’t believe you learned in such a short time.” Su Bai glanced at his watch, then continued. “A little over half an hour to learn. Amazing.”
Yan Hua’s pace of learning was genuinely fast. Su Bai recalled that when he had once learned to ride a bicycle, it had taken him an entire day.
The reckless spirit of a Totem Warrior really did make the difference. Not afraid of falling, not afraid of pain, and back on the bicycle the moment they hit the ground.
“Great. Ah’Hua is truly amazing. As expected, she picked it up very quickly.” Yu Ying beamed and swung her pink fox tail back and forth.
“Riding a bicycle looks like a lot of fun.” Sha Lan swung her cat tail with equal delight.
And then the two tails overlapped with each other, like two people holding hands.
Seen from behind it was rather a charming sight. The fluffy pink fox tail and the white cat tail resting together.
If Su Bai had caught that moment, he would certainly not have been able to resist going over for a good ruffle.
“It’s so much fun. I never imagined this is what it feels like to ride a bicycle. It’s amazing.” Yan Hua kept doing laps around the square.
She had gone from the slight wobbling of the very start to riding in complete steadiness now. Doing laps was not difficult at all. The whole thing had taken only about half an hour.
“Don’t get too carried away. Keep your eyes on the path ahead.” Su Bai smiled as he reminded her.
Though learning to ride and do laps in such a short time was genuinely something worth praising.
Yan Hua made one last wide circuit before stopping. She left the bicycle standing and kept grinning to herself.
She pushed back the hair the wind had tousled and said with a bright smile. “Shaman, I really like the feeling of riding a bicycle. It wasn’t even that hard to learn.”
“It’s mostly because you took so many falls that you got the knack of it fast. If you’d been afraid of falling you wouldn’t have learned nearly so quickly.” Su Bai reached out and flicked the tip of her nose.
“Either way, I know how to ride a bicycle now. Next time I can ride on my own outside.” Yan Hua laughed happily.
“So, it’s my turn to learn now. Is there any technique you can pass on?” Sha Lan’s cat ears gave a little flick.
“The technique is just that, don’t worry about falling. You have to be willing to try. And don’t grip the handlebars too hard.” Yan Hua began to instruct with the authority of someone who had been through it.
What Yan Hua taught was genuinely useful. These were exactly the things to keep in mind when learning to ride.
“Right then. I’ll aim to learn in a short time too, and then hand things over to Xiao Yu.” Sha Lan declared it with great conviction.
“I’ll be counting on you to teach me the technique afterwards.” Yu Ying gave her sweetest smile.
“Don’t worry. If you really want to learn it, it’s not too difficult.” Su Bai smiled along.
He thought the girls looked rather like they were haggling with each other, and he found the whole scene quite endearing.
“All right.” Yu Ying gave a vague little nod.
Sha Lan walked forward with a grand solemnity, as though setting out for a battlefield.
She kicked up the bicycle stand, then seated herself on the saddle.
One foot on the ground, one foot on the pedal, she hesitated a long while before she finally lifted the other foot up.
It was only then she realized that riding a bicycle was not as simple as it looked from the outside. The moment she was actually on it, the nerves set in.
“Relax. The tenser you get, the easier it is to fall.” Su Bai said it gently.
“Yes.” Sha Lan steadied her breathing.
She lifted the foot that had been on the ground, and began to pedal forward.
“Ah!”
Silavin: It’s quite true. Riding a bike is easy if one just bravely goes forward. The faster one goes, the easier it is to keep balance.
