The meaning behind the Slaughter Ancient God was, in truth, not difficult to understand.

Every era was founded by an Ancient God that became the God King.

They established the World Principles of that era, allowing it to develop freely, and when a certain point in time arrived, the Ancient God would awaken, relying upon the Ancient Gods Struggle For Supremacy to extinguish that era, then open a new one anew. This was how they would let everything begin once more.

This was the cycle and renewal of an era.

If everything followed this rule, a single era’s lifespan, short as a few hundred thousand years, long as over a million, was not particularly extensive, and would inevitably cause the living beings born within that world to struggle to transcend the World Principles and designs the Ancient God had originally laid down.

Yet if an era were to never cease, if it simply continued developing without end, the world would become more and more uncontrollable. It might potentially have existences that even the Ancient Gods themselves could not govern.

    A simple example.

At present, near the end of this era, the mightiest existences ought to be those of Divine Beings.

True Divinity, largely at Level 160 and above, was an unreachable height for the Players of this era.

Those that approached it, would come to realise they had gradually walked into their own shackle. One which was too difficult to break, and they struggled to achieve any further breakthrough.

But who could guarantee that this shackle would never be broken?

If, through unceasing battle and Levelling Up, could these existences not one day be capable of attaining power on par with the Ancient Gods, even surpassing them?

After all, if an era were infinite, then the time available for its living beings to break through those shackles would likewise be infinite.

It was possible that within a finite lifespan, a being of exceptional talent might be unable to become on par with the Ancient Gods before dying of old age.

But if that being accumulated its experience and resources for its Descendants, or if it seized some power that allowed it, like the era itself, to never age and never die, forever striving to break through…

Then ultimately, it would inevitably reach the height or even surpass the Ancient Gods.

    Infinite time represents infinite possibility.

Compared with the Ancient Gods, who casually lived to the end of an era, a living being born within a single unending era harboured far too many possibilities.

And so, the Ancient Gods would initiate the Ancient Gods Struggle For Supremacy. They would use the battles among thirty-six Ancient Gods to terminate an era, then open a new one, letting everything restart, preventing anything from transcending their control.

This was the true meaning of the Ancient Gods Struggle For Supremacy. The Slaughter Ancient God, having become God King twice, deeply understood this principle.

Perhaps it was precisely because he understood the meaning behind the Ancient Gods Struggle For Supremacy more thoroughly that his grasp of the role of Ancient God ran deeper than any other. And so, every single time, he came extraordinarily close to the position of God King, even claiming it.

The Slaughter Ancient God desired to become God King, to send this era to its ruin. Jiang Baishen understood this in his heart. The rest of the Sacred Jiang Family understood it too.

What was strange was that the Sacred Jiang Family members showed not the slightest trace of surprise.

It was as though the destruction of this era was something no one among them had any objection to whatsoever.

Jiang Baishen even gave a measured nod and said, “Since the opposing party is an Ancient God seeking to prevent the Ancient Gods Struggle For Supremacy, then what should we do? Shall I go and locate where they are, and then…”

Jiang Baishen did not continue his words, yet the meaning was already abundantly clear.

The Slaughter Ancient God considered it for a moment, then said. “There is no need. Compared with my desire to kill them, their desire to kill me is far stronger. They appear to know, within the ranks of the Ancient Gods, what sort of existence I am. Since they have already learned of my position, they will certainly come again. Just gather everyone here and wait. When they arrive, join me in facing the enemy.”

“My full awakening is not far off. If they truly send several Ancient Gods my way, they will just be letting me replenish my energy, raising my degree of awakening even higher. In fact, I welcome their arrival. The sooner, the better.”

Having spoken, the Slaughter Ancient God’s tone turned cold and venomous. “That bastard, the Fallen Corpse Ancient God, after becoming God King, he truly created a world suited for his own survival, while also laying plans in advance to secure a vast hoard of resources for awakening ahead of schedule.”

“It is already exceedingly difficult for me to surpass him. And these people, they are just the right opportunity for me to stage a comeback from the brink of failure.”

“One Fallen Corpse Ancient God. One Holy Mountain Ancient God. As long as I can defeat them, I can essentially lock in the seat of God King. When that time comes, I will open a superior new era, and fulfil your people’s wishes.”

Jiang Baishen listened to these words without a trace of joy upon his face. There was only a sense of liberation, and the exhilarating release of a great vengeance finally repaid. He clasped his hands together once more, answering with resonant conviction. “For this great goal, we shall exert every last ounce of our strength. Even if our enemies are Ancient Gods, we will do everything in our power to assist you in becoming God King!”

Behind him, several thousand members of the Sacred Jiang Family echoed in unison. “We shall do everything in our power to assist you in becoming God King!”

“We shall do everything in our power to assist you in becoming God King!”

“We shall do everything in our power to assist you in becoming God King!”

The Slaughter Ancient God’s crimson eyes swept across every person present. He said nothing. Upon his sole mobile skull, layers of stone began to emerge, until his entire form had transformed into a statue.

Now, he remained completely still, without the faintest sign of movement.

    On the other side.

Lu Fan’s body gave a shudder as he slowly opened his eyes.

Previously, upon arriving at the Sacred Jiang Family, Lu Fan had concentrated all of his focus entirely upon his Projection.

Now that the Projection had been slain, his attention returned to his True Body.

Seeing the change come over Lu Fan, the others rushed forward to ask how things had gone, whether he had seen the Slaughter Ancient God.

Lu Fan’s expression was complex. He looked across the group, then gave a slow nod. “I saw him… But, my Projection was killed. And it was an instant kill at that.”

*Siii…* A collective sharp intake of breath rippled through those around him.

After all, they all knew how strong Lu Fan’s Projection was. In practice, it was no different from his True Body. If the Projection could be instant killed, did that not imply that if Lu Fan’s True Body had gone instead, he too would have immediately died?

Just what kind of power could instant-kill Lu Fan…

Jian Ying and the others felt a wave of dread wash through them, because had Lu Fan not proposed sending his Projection ahead to scout, they would have been the ones who died.

“This time, our enemy truly that terrifying?” Han Ke grew immediately fraught with worry, her eyes fixed on Lu Fan, filled with concern.

Lu Fan considered it, then said, “They are really, really strong. Far stronger than any enemy I’ve faced. But, to say there is absolutely no hope of fighting back isn’t true either.”

“My Projection being instant killed was mainly due to the fact that I was caught off guard. It failed to sense that Ancient God. If I had been properly prepared, my Projection would not have suffered a loss like this.”
