Chapter 1183, The Alliance is Formed

You speak with a golden tongue, but in reality is it not simply that you wish to stand supreme among the 36 Ancient Gods, and any existence that surpasses you must be snuffed out?”

“If that is how you insist on interpreting it, there is nothing I can do about that.” The Fallen Corpse Ancient God did not deny it. “But, I have always believed that the position of Ancient God goes to the capable. The turning of each era, and each new beginning, pulls all Ancient Gods back to the same starting line. Whoever awakens first, whoever awakens to a greater degree, that one gets the chance to contend for the position of God King. It is all perfectly fair. And only a sufficiently powerful Ancient God can become God King. Is that not the very meaning of the Ancient Gods Struggle For Supremacy?”

“Every era presents its opportunities. Whoever seizes them becomes God King. It is simple to understand.”

“The Holy Mountain Ancient God and its allies formed an alliance in this era, seeking to claim one, or even two consecutive positions of God King, I consider that entirely reasonable. But from what I know, these two cooperating aim to hold the position of God King continuously, giving no other Ancient God any opportunity whatsoever. I naturally can never permit such behaviour.”

“Once you and I have broken apart their alliance and stripped them of their Divine Seats, we shall bestow them upon other New Gods, their alliance will eternally collapse. At that point, you and I would end our alliance as well, and the Ancient Gods Struggle For Supremacy could restore a new order, would that not be far more interesting?”

“The Ancient Gods Struggle For Supremacy is fair?” The Slaughter Ancient God laughed. “If it were truly fair, why does the previous era’s God King always manage to seize the advantage in the following era? Just as with you in this era, you slumbered in the most resource-rich location and made your preparations in advance. While other Ancient Gods were still slumbering, you had already accumulated countless resources, so that the moment you awakened, you could devour them immediately and rapidly awaken.”

“All other God Kings are the same. Each time before slumbering they leave themselves ample contingencies, ensuring that in the next era’s final years they can seize the first-mover advantage in awakening.”

“If other Ancient Gods lacked the strength and opportunity to topple the previous God King, how difficult would that be? Is this your so-called fairness? You, who have always done things of this sort, and yet still speak endlessly of maintaining the fairness of the Ancient Gods Struggle For Supremacy, do you not find that laughable?”

The Fallen Corpse Ancient God disagreed, countering, “Laughable? I find nothing improper in my thinking whatsoever. Since I was the God King who created this era, why should I not lay groundwork in the following era, making it more likely that I can contend for the God King position in the next era?”

“This is merely the proper advantage I earned by claiming the position of God King in the previous era.”

“As for the Holy Mountain Ancient God and its allies, wishing to combine their power and hold the position of God King, I do not find that entirely unacceptable. If they truly managed to do it, and continued to hold the position of God King without ceasing, I would have nothing much to say about it. After all, that too would be something obtained through their own ability and strategy. It is entirely reasonable.”

“What I seek to do is break the equilibrium they have established and shatter their alliance so that I will continue to have a chance at being God King.”

After a brief pause, the Fallen Corpse Ancient God added, “At the end of the day, I am not acting for fairness at all. I am simply finding ways to resist them. I can only say that if you and I do not cooperate, the Holy Mountain Ancient God and the Desolate Ancient God truly will hold the position of God King without end, until their alliance fractures.”

“Were it truly to come to that, who knows how many eras might pass before we have a true chance at winning.”

“If that happens, the Ancient Gods Struggle For Supremacy would hold no meaning whatsoever, for as long as they consecutively hold the position of God King, the possibility of any other Ancient God becoming God King would become vanishingly small.”

“You must decide, whether to join me in breaking this situation, or to accept it calmly, and awaken era after era to discover that your awakening holds no meaning, because no matter how hard you strive, you cannot wrest the position of God King away from them.”

“The choice is entirely yours. If you agree to cooperate with me, I can promise you this, in this era I will become God King, but in the era after, the position of God King will certainly be yours. For I have arrived at a better idea regarding how to shape a world, one that can construct a world more advantageous to myself.”

“I wish to run an experiment in the following era, requiring only the result, without truly needing to become God King.”

“And so, the position of God King can readily be yielded to you in that era, allowing you to shape the following era. At worst, in the third era, I shall simply compete with you for the position of God King once more.”

“If you are unwilling to cooperate with me, I shall devour you here, raising my own degree of awakening. Then, I shall seize this opportunity and go to war against the Holy Mountain Ancient God and the Desolate Ancient God, seeking to slay them before they have fully come into their own, and send them into their long slumber.”

“If I win, I will devour them, and in this era, I would be truly without a rival. The next age will once again be opened by me. Meanwhile, If I lose, then the position of God King will naturally belong to them.”

“As for the next era and the era after that, whether they will continue to hold it consecutively, that is impossible to say. Though I estimate there is an eighty percent chance they will continue to firmly occupy the position of God King for several eras in succession.”

“Give me your answer now.”

Having said his piece, the Fallen Corpse Ancient God spoke no further, simply waiting quietly for the Slaughter Ancient God’s response.

The Slaughter Ancient God’s nine heads fixed themselves upon that bronze coffin, impossible to read.

An indeterminate time passed. At last, the Slaughter Ancient God spoke. “In truth, there is not much to choose between. By your account, it seems the position of God King in the coming several eras would have no connection to me whatsoever. But if I choose to cooperate with you, at minimum, the position of God King in the following era would still be open to me, provided you have not deceived me.”

“On one side, not the slimmest chance. On the other, a gamble that you are a being of your word.”

“Though I hold no faith in your character, I still find myself inclined toward this solitary scrap of a chance. Moreover, this life of mine was saved by you as well. To gamble on this wager costs me nothing at all, and yet I still have the chance to win the position of God King in the following era.”

“So, for the next two eras, let you and I temporarily cooperate. If in the following era you dare betray me and refuse to give me the position of God King, I shall come after you in every subsequent era. At that point, the position of God King will hold no appeal for me whatsoever.”
